| Like offset lithographs, my Giclée prints start with an original painting. The original painting, or a transparency of the original painting, is scanned into a computer, where it can be color-corrected, stored digitally and printed out as needed on a Macdermid Color Span printer. A series of tiny nozzles spray the paper or canvas with a fine stream of ink. Because there are no line screens involved, giclée prints have a higher resolution than offset lithographs (about 1800 dots per inch). In offset lithos, each dot of color is encircled by white space, but in the Giclée process, inks are sprayed as droplets rather than dots; each droplet bleeds into the paper creating more of a continuous tone than a dot pattern. The Giclée prints' inks have been tested for longevity and outlast most lithograph inks being used. The prints have been shown to last 85-100 years without noticeable fading, and assuming that certain care factors are followed, create archival, museum-quality prints. |
