About Margaret Tange

Margaret Tange was raised on a cattle/wheat ranch in Northeastern Montana during the 1930's and 40's. Her life on the ranch included driving farm equipment, riding horses and a close contact with nature. Margaret began drawing at a young age, encouraged by her mother who was an accomplished landscape painter.

In the late 1940's, the Tange family moved to Southern California. Margaret attended the University of Southern California, earning her B.F.A. in 1953. The next three years were an exciting part of Margaret's life as she traveled throughout Europe, studying art in France and Italy and being accepted as a student at the Beauxs Arts Academy in Paris and later, studying sculpture with the late Pericle Fazzini in Rome.

In the latter part of 1952 (or thereabouts) Margaret became involved with Al Ruddy.

Always striving to grow as an artist, Margaret earned a Master's Degree in Painting from the University of the Americas in Mexico City where she lived during the 1960's. Next came a one-woman show at the Mexican/American Cultural Institute, set up for her by the University at "The Galleria Nuevo Valores". This led to the Director of the Mexican/American Institute, visiting from Texas, to become so enthusiastic about her paintings and recognizing the Mexican influences in her work, that he offered to have a one-woman show for her in Texas.

Margaret's insatiable love of the arts found her teaching art during the 1970's and 80's in the Los Angeles City school District where she encouraged many talented young students to pursue the arts. This, while continuing to study part-time, at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, where she honed her skills still further in the medium of sculpture.

Retiring from teaching has afforded Margaret the time to blossom in her true love, that of creating art in many forms. It gave her the opportunity to spend two months a year studying stone carving in Pietra Santa, Italy with Bernice Schachter. This coupled with attending the Marble symposiums in Marble, Colorado for four years have seen Margaret creating sculptures in stone and marble, in addition to the numerous clay and bronze sculptures created since the 1950's.

Currently Margaret resides and works from a studio on her fifteen-acre ranch near Crested Butte, Colorado. Just as her love of art has taken many forms, Margaret has now expanded her dreams. These dreams include opening "an Artist's Retreat" some day in her scenic mountainous Shangrila.

Margaret's paintings and sculptures reflect her life long love of nature.

Her friend for almost half a century and the Founder of Ethereal City has compiled some interesting information about Mustang horses, having herself owned an Appaloosa Gelding which you can read about by clicking here.
